Weatherstripping for 96 convertible
I am trying to make a decision to install weatherstripping myself or pay to have it done. I have sent after a Chilton's and a Haynes manual, which will hopefully coach me through the task. I was wondering if anyone has installed new weatherstripping on a C4 convertible and ask for an honest opinion, was it hard? I am handy, and I feel confident that I could do the job if given step by step instructions.
I am being told by my local Chevy dealorship that they want $1700.00 for the job and it is very labor intensive. I have seen that the parts alone on the Mid America website, which are GM parts and not reproductions, are a third at best of this price. I'm not a cheapskate but $1700.00 sounds outragous. - Jim3136

Jim,
It is fairly easy. I recommend you go to Corvettemagazine.com. One of the feature articles is how to replace the window seals on a C4. Check it out and see if you want to go forward with the project. Click on the link below and check it out.

Sorry, that was for the door seals only. The other seals were not as bad and if you search there are other web links to walk to thru the other seals. Taking the old glue / adheasive off seemed to be the biggest issue.

You might want to check out www.weatherstripspecial.com for excellent prices. I bought the 11 piece set from them for my 87 Vette conv't, but I didn't put them on as I paid only $ 150.00 Cdn here in Ontario at a trim shop to have them put on. It's worth it to shop around. Good luck.

I'm just about finished restoring my 86 coupe and I replaced all the seals and wetherstripping myself. It is not really difficult, just take your time and be maticulous. The most important thing to remember is make sure the area where the old w/s was is very clean when installing the new w/s. Some of it is glued and some is not. You should be able to tell when removing the old if it was or not.
