68 camaro body on c5?
yeah i talked with a classic/sports car specialist and found some valuable stuff out. i trusted what the guy said becuase he wasshowing me how they put the ls1 in a 69( here is the exact car: http://automaniacs.com/69camaro/69camaro.htm) and he personally owns a 68. he said you could swap the subframes, assuming the corvette is a bolt on subframe(i don't know if it is or not, so if someone knows let me know), but the rear would be more of an engineering challenge because of the independent suspension. he also mentioned if youintegrated the corvette suspension and powertrain it would handle just as well.
he also showed me a front subframe custom made by chip foose on one of the trucks in order to explain what i would be encountering ground clearance wise, but i shouldn't have any problems if i were to just swap it in along with the motor, which would have to have the throttle body converted from fly-by-wire to cable operated along with a reprogrammed ECU, just minor stuff, really.
I have to say i've learned a ton researching this, and i've gone from 1% chance of this ever happening to arranging purchase of a complete body(needs major body work)with no subframes, ironically for $500. if this goes through ihope to have my dream car. if not, who cares i learned a lot and have the rest of my life to do it.

Okay, look, a 67 or 68 Camaro is a really super looking car. Functionally, it is maybe 30% of a C5. If you have a C5 to work with, don't waste it making it look like a 68 Camaro. If you really want a 68 Camaro, man up, and make it work with the original or close to it drivetrain.
I owned a few of those early Camaro's. And still have a 69 Firebird. Driving those around a curvy road is simply a different world from a C5. Not bad, not boring, not even dangerous if you understand the car. Just different altogether. Personally, I would consider putting a C5 inside a 68 Camaro sacrilege. The C5 deserves better.
Like I said, man up, either go with a C5 as a C5 or get the real deal 68 Camaro. Anything else is BS!
Of course this is just my opinion, and everyone is entitled to a different, and probably incorrect opnion from
a lack of experience. Forget the flash, and go with the function. For that matter, I consider a C5 to be much
more beautiful than a 68 Camaro. In time it will be recognized as such.

So are you against the whole idea of improving a car to perform better as technolgy provides? This is, essentially what we are doing anytime we modify a car, although to a much lesser degree. If Chevrolet had the technology in 1968 they would have incorporated it accordingly. I agree these cars should be respected and treated as such, but wouldn't this involve improving the car for efficiency and performance. Plus, how many entirely original68 camaros do you see driving around. If there is one it should be immediately placed in a museum or used strictly as a show car. My point is,no gen 1 camaro daily driver around now is 100% stock, and 90% stock isno better than10% stock. Not stock is not stock. So if you are going to put a new engine or suspension or anything for that matter, put the best parts in you can find.
I also doubt that if you found a 68 camaro engineer he/she would be insulted or consider it "sacrilige" that someone had the love of the car so much that they wanted to make it better and be among theelite performers nearly half a century afterChevrolet developed the car. Chevy would be and stillis proud that it is so easy to improve upon their cars, dating back to the muscle car era when they were competing against Ford and Daimler Chrysler in super stock drag racing and definitely not stock autocross.
I am also not sure if youwere trying to insult my manliness by telling me to "man up", but if you were that argument is extremely non sequitor and below the belt. What difference in hell does it make if I drive a poorer handling car? I think the guys spending $40k on a 69 with an ls1 and T56 would agree. And obviously someone else does as well or else I don't know how a company could stay in business selling only parts to convert a classic camaro to c5 suspension and drivetrain. Also, popular hotrodding, a well known classic car magazine, didn't find it wrong to do the exact same thing I am embarking upon, as I found out they did just that while doing research on the subject.
You are right, though, a 68 camaro is 30% of what a c5 is, but not when I get done with it. and it won't just be a c5 that looks like a 68 camaro. it will be a 68 camaro with GM's latest and greatest technology.

it is interesting this came up again. i actually had to turn down a 68 camaro for $6700 a week ago because i'm saving up for school now, but it is still in my sights somewhere down the road to turn a 68 into a modern machine. plus my boss, who collects classic cars, convinced me that in the future a c5 and a 68 camaro will be worth around the same.
