Default 98 Auto Trans

Hello all

My C5 here lately has not let me get out of Park. When I start it up, it won't let me shift out. After it runs for several minutes, it finally lets me shift. I don't drive it everyday, but I had the same problem with my C4. Has anyone else had the same problem? or know how what causes this? Thanks in advance for your help.

All of the Automaitics that I have worked on the Park is a mechanical action with a parking paw that locks on a sprag gear in the front of the transmission. I don't believe that there is any way the hydraulics could prevent you from shifting out of park.
Is tha shift handle not moving or can you move the shifter into Drive but it wont go.
the shifter rod goes through the control valve. I would drop the pan and remove the control valve and look for something like a retainer pin out of location. The park paw and its components are made to mechanicly lock the main shaft and are simple once you see them work. sounds like something misaligned

The best way I can describe it is: When you try to shift any automatic vehicle out of park without the depressing the brake. But when I press the brake, it still won't shift out of park. It is "locked." Does that make sense? Eventually it lets me shift out of park, but I have to wait....sometimes a few minutes, and sometimes a few seconds. It varies. Very strange....

The Brake Transmission Shift Lock is designed to prevent shifting out of PARK while the ignition is ON and the brake pedal is not pressed. The transmission shift lock solenoid is energized only when the ignition switch is in ON or START, the transmission is in PARK, and the brake pedal is not pressed. When the brake pedal is pressed the brake transmission shift lock switch opens and the shift lock soleniod de-energizes. If the solenoid plunger sticks and fails to retract, you will not be able to shift out of Park. The system is designed so that if there is an electrical failure in the circuit, the Shift Lock will not lock the shifter in the Park position. The other possibility is that the shift lock switch on the brake pedal is failing to open when the pedal is depressed. You can test this by unplugging the brake transmission shift lock switch connector. Then turn the ignition switch to ON, and attempt to shift the transmission out of PARK.

The shift lock control actuator should be located in the console with the shift lever, since the shift indicator lights run through the same plug as the actuator. It is a 4 wire connector with 1 orange wire, 1 gray, 1 black, and 1 dark green with white stripe. The orange and gray wires are for the light, the other 2 are for the solenoid. The dark green/wht is the 12V. input with key on, in Park, and brake pedal NOT depressed. Black is ground.
The wires on the brake switch will be orange/black for 12V. input to switch from Park/Neutral switch, and Dark green/wht for output to solenoid. Good luck.
