Default AIR System Bank 2 CODE P1416

Check engine light comes on and throws code p1416. I can clear the code but it returns in about 50 miles. Any ideas on where to start? Mass air flow?

Hi Bryan,
My service manual ( Vol. 2of3, GMP/03-y-2 ) page 6-758, for my '03 coupe says code P1416 has to do with the Hot o2 sensor, HO2S, which is affected by the secondary air injection pump system. Good luck............ cjs

you have an electric air pump [like the old belt driven smog pumps] its on driver side front inner fender. it gets air from air filter the pumps it to the check valves on the exhaust manifolds. these are one way valves.the pump is like a mini leaf blower it puts out. have ya done anything with air cleaner. you con see driver side check valve.pass. side is behind manifold.you may want to monitor o2 sensors [all 4 at the same time]the ecm is looking how fast they pick up fresh air [sense]its looking for a fast change.make sure pump is giving air to both sides.it only does this under certain conditions so a scan tool like snapon maybe needed [the tool can command the pump on so you can monitor sensors

Thanks Jerry for the response. It makes a lot of sense. I am not sure how to get a hold of a scan tool so I may just start with 02 sensor replacements. The motor just turned 80K and I am going to have to swap them sooner or later. What do you think? It is more likely a sensor than the air pump isn't it?

take on of the black hoses off the check valve on the exhaust manifold, have someone start the car,ya should feel a lot of air flow for a few sec. next try to remove the check valves on each manifold and see if ya can blow through them.one valve may open easy .the air pump is forcing air into both but if one hangs up it will trip a code.that is why a snap on scanner is good it can command the pump on while you monitor the sensors or your gonna have to do the shotgun fix "spray it with parts until its fixed " costly my friend
