Brass Gear in Headlamp motor and now it's popping up all the time!
I replaced the plastic gear in the left headlamp motor on my 2000 C5 a few weeks back, as the plastic one had worn out, and everything was working great.
Now occassionally, something weird happens. When I turn on the lights both headlamps pop up normally... however, when I turn the headlights off, both headlamps go down, but then the left one (the one with the new brass gear) pops back up! So now the left one is up and the right one is down (lights are off).
I have to open the hood and manually crank it back down. The one on the right still has the plastic gear and is working fine.
Weird, huh?
Any idears???
Thanks in advance.

You know, sometimes you wonder if we really are making progress with all our technology, or just creating new things to fail.
Anyway, good luck, this ought to fix it.

What's funny is that I thought I broke it when I replaced the gear... not sure if I'm MORE or LESS disappointed to find out it's a design defect... [

I realize this is an older thread.... being a new comer I was looking through past information and this caught my attention. I seem to have the EXACT same problem with my left front headlamp........except, when I turn the headlights off. They come on fine but when turned off both left and right go down, but then the left side goes crazy....up and down and up and down until after about 4 cycles it stops. Sometimes that stop position is down and sometimes the stop position is up or part way.
Would the fix for this be the same as described in the thread.
All comments appreciated............and I won't get those strange looks!

Thanks for the diagram and fix. I used that to get into the left light and found that the insulator on the forward stop tab had worn at the edge and allowed the actuator to bypass. Simple fix, I replaced the insulator and everything is back to normal..
