Im storing my car in the garage for the winter, i pulled it out twice now to start it up and the battery is totaly dead? i checked all the lights and everything and none are on. the second time i pulled it out i let it run for like 45 mins and took it for a quick spin around my subdivision since it was nice. the next day i had to move it to put christmas **** up in the attic and it was dead already. i drove it all summer since i bought it and it never died once and there was times when i didnt drive it for a week then. anyone have any ideas why?

 

This could be normal. I haven't been a vette owner long, but my SHO's battery will die in about 2 weeks if its left without being charged or started. I think this is pretty typical for most cars, they still draw current when nothing is on (computer memory, radio memory alarm etc) if you want to store it for a long time, you should put it on a fully automatic battery charger, or at least disconnect the negative battery terminal when you are going to let it sit for a few weeks without being started.

 

How long was it sitting the first time it went dead? How old is the battery?
These cars draw power even when they are off, for things like the alarm and keyless entry etc. If you let them sit for very long they draw the battery down. The problem is, lead acid batteries don't like to be discharged all the way. If it's a few years old then the battery is probably shot now. Get a new battery and put a battery tender on it when it's in storage.

I had to learn this the hard way with my motorcycle's $100 battery. I went through two batteries before I caught on.

The cheapest way to solve your problem is to take your dead battery to your local auto part chain store. The ones in Arizona (Auto Zone, Checker/Krager) will test and charge your battery for free.

Once you know the battery is charged and good you are 1/2 way there.

Put the battery back in and check your alternator readout by starting the car and using the "Guages" button. Your alternator should read 14.1 volts (Or something in that range) If it does, the alternator is fine.

If the battery is fine, and the alternator is fine then your car is good to go.

Fully charge the battery than have the battery load tested. Thats the only way to test the battery correctly. Doesn't really matter how new the battery is, these lead acid batteries are prone to failure if they are not kept fully charged. Also the cold weather is really bad on batteries. I keep a trickle charge on my Motorcycle battery through the winter, IfI didn't I would be going through batteries left and right. The Gell cell in my 52 has lasted 6 years now, the car is garage kept, but has only seen very limited use, i keep the battery cables off, and charge the battery once a month, and it has not failed yet. Gell cells are much better than Lead acid, but if you choose lead acid batteries than you have to keep them charged, and don't count on the alternator bringing the battery back up to full charge by just driving the car around the block.

 

EVEN DOWN HERE IN NEW ORLEANS WHERE IT HARDLY EVER GOES BELOW 30...I STILL KEEP MY BATTERY TENDER ON...BATTERY IS 4 YEARS OLD AND STILL CHECK OUT FIND...CARQUEST MAKES A NICE 1.5 AMP TENDER FOR AROUND $29...GOOD LUCK
