check engine light
My car is a 1999 Fixed Roof Coupe. I have had problems with Delco batteries leaking and corroding the terminals. Recently my "Service ABS" & Service Traction Control" lights were on. As a check, I took the terminal wires off the posts, cleaned the terminals and reinstalled the cables. After a short ride, the lights went off and the ABS & TractionControl started working again. Now a few days later, the "Check Engine Light" is on. The mechanic at my local Chevy dealer has cleared the codes and told me he received a 5mV reference. He is still checking, but cannot determine the problem. I have thought about replacing the battery with an Optima battery and see if that helps. I would appreciate any information, if anyone has had similar problems.
It sure sounds like your EBCM unit is dying. Check out my removal and install procedure on this page:

It's the last procedure and gives you an idea what type of codes you can pull up. I believe your 97 doesn't have active handling, so that would explain why you didn't see "Servive Active Handling".
Good luck.
