Default Fuel Gauge Gone Goofy

Took my '97 with 10K for a ride after it sat all winter. After 10 miles with cruise on at 65 mph, the fuel gauge dropped from half a tank down to the empty peg and warning light came on for "low fuel". Other gauges remained ok, except tire pressure readings which were gone. Plenty of gas in the tank and after a couple minutes, the fuel gauge corrected itself and tire pressures were back. It did this several times and then it was ok. After a brief stop, I drove another 50 miles without incident. If the tire pressure readings weren't affected, I would say sending unit in fuel tank, but am puzzled. Any comments before I have it checked out? Thanks, Dave

I would t ry to use some type of fuel system cleaner that you pour into your tank while it is full especially if it sat around all winter. Had problems like that a few years back and I poured in berryman fuel system cleaner and started using shell gasoline ( supposedly they use extra fuel cleaners or something like that ). Problem solved.

I did put a can of Seafoam in the tank last fall, but that was on top of a half-tank of gas that was a couple months old, and then I did not run the car until recently. Probably need to get some fresh gas in it along with a system cleaner.

I pour in a large (16 oz) can of Chevron Techron at every oil change (once per year) and have never had a fuel gauge problem. This IS somewhat common, however - especially with 97-00 C5s.
