Default fuel gauge problems 82 corvette

fuel is definitely full but gauge is reading 1/4 of a tank. when i unplug the connector wires back at the tank the gauge moves way past full. when plugged backed in it goes back to 1/4. voltage is 3.34 volts and the sending unit( i think ) is reading 21.4 ohms. this is as far as i have gotten. appreciate any help.....

Hi Donald. The fuel sending unit is a variable resistor that is actuated by a float, located inside the fuel tank. It sounds like your float is stuck or that the resistor has gone bad. Try shaking the car to slosh the fuel around in the tank to try and free up a possible stuck float, other than that, you may need to remove and replace the sending unit.

Default fuel gauge

It works like a "bobber" system (that's if you go fishing). There is a Fuel Level Sender that basicly looks like a bar with a handle on it located right above the fuel pump and all it does is float. That is where you get your reading, primative but that is where you get a great fuel reading on a down hill slope and a horrible one going up hill. If it is stuck that floater will stay and, that is where you get your constant 1/4 reading, or if it is stuck at a 1/2 you get that one etc... I would check that first before I went nuts on anything else, and no you do not have to drop or drain the tank, it pulls out with the fuel pump and as long as you are extremely careful and sure handed, but if anything gets in the gas tank while you do this, then guess what you've got to do. So be methodical when you do this.

The f100 short bed I have needs a new tank and I do not like it behind the seat. So I want to relocate it under the bed and behind the rearend. Does any one Know of a factory tank that will fit or anyone that has relacated theirs in a better location or different type of tank? Any help would be great?
