Pulled the harmonic balancer and cam bolts were tight but chain has some slack in it. Would this give me the cmp high voltage code?

Arrow while I'm here....

Pulled harmonic balancer and timing cover to see the 3 bolts on cam gear were tight. I was disappointed to see this but noticed slack in the timing chain, maybe half an inch play. While I'm here I might as well replace the chain so I upgraded to a comp cams double roller I purchased today ($144 total). Will keep y'all updated once parts arrive and are installed.

P.S. I decided on a double roller kit for additional security and peace of mind.

Post Update

Well I tried to find a puller that could remove the crank sprocket was was unsuccessfull so I decided to go with an LS2 timing chain that is stronger than the LS1.

In the pic the chain on the left is the stock LS1 and the one on the right is the stock LS2 that I installed.

I am currently waiting for some knock sensors and wiring to arrive since I shorted out my original wiring with the replacement intake manifold installation. I think lack of patience caused the short so I will take things slower from now on.

Post Question to all

A friend of mine thinks I might have bent a valve or two, he noticed some marks on two valves like they were rubbing abnormally. Im at the point where I want to upgrade to a better head/cam combo to gain horsepower but also thinking sionce me car has 106K miles on it maybe I should pull the engine and just have the block overhauled.

What do you guys think? Overhaul the block or just replace the heads and cam combo?

Rob,

There are C5s out there with over 200,000 miles on them. If your block doesn't blow oil or have any other signs of wear or damage, then there's no reason to overhaul.

It may be sticking fuel injectors. Have them checked, ASAP or catalytic converter damage will occur.

Post Cool

Thanks Dave, I am going to built a 500 HP ls1 with a head/cam combo I found at summit racing along with various other things like a bigger intake manifold and throttle body and Will also have to have it tuned. Not sure if I can pull the cam out with the block still in the car, might be able if I remove the radiator.

I will work on it slowly during the cold weather month(s) in my garage and when it warms up I can finish up in my backyard.
