TORQUE VS HORSEPOWER

TORQUE VS HORSEPOWER
I guess given the dialogue some of us have been having on the subject of torque and also on horsepower to the rear wheel or to the fly wheel or to the ferris wheel......now would be a good time to discuss the importance of horsepower vs torque in making a car "fast."
Some of my friends say it's all about torque......others say you gotta have the horsepower. My question is.....how do these two relate to each other in determining the "strength" of a car? Can someone please enlighten me? Thanks a bunch!

RE: TORQUE VS HORSEPOWER
Actually, I like to have a lot of both. My Porsche has HP (320 HP in a car weighing only 3100 lbs) but not a lot of torque (273 ft lbs, not really that bad, but . . .).
Low end torque gives a car a powerful, flexible-driving feel to it, no need to shift too often, lots of pull at low RPM. That is why I prize it so highly. On the other hand, sheer HP is what wins drag races and gives high top speed.
I'm incredibly unreasonable and want a lot of both.

Fellow Vette owners, my C5 has 362 ft-lbs Torque @ 3333 rpm and 387 HP at 5774 rpm. Would you respect a car with those numbers? Please be honest and don't spare me any pain.

RE: TORQUE VS HORSEPOWER
Is that what its putting out at the wheels or crank? cause thats c5 zo6 fast if its at the wheels, if its not at the wheels then its still really quick, why wouldnt you respect it? You could have an evo that only puts out 300 hp on a good day or a civic that puts out 200 hp or my 240sx that only puts out 155 hp
