Cold Air Intake
I have an 05 C6 that is stock and would like to keep it mostly that way. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if a Cold Air Intake is worth while and if so, what brand? I don't believe in dumping a lot of money into a car especially when it does nothing for the resale value.
Are they worth it? It depends. Some add no HP at all, others a bit. The Honker is pretty good, but more difficult to install than some others.
No Cold Air Intake is going to add enough RWHP that you can even feel it - they will add from 3-5 RWHP on a chassis dyno and the best will add a bit more on the street (they work better when air is moving into the intakes, something you can't simulate on a dyno). Some people will tell you they add more by dyno and strip results never verify those claims. Most iof them also make the intake noise of the engine louder (some people like it, some don't), too.
For what it is worth, I would only do this if you are going to do the rest of the "stay out of the engine itself" mods: long-tube headers (20-25 RWHP), catback exhaust (5-10 RWHP) and cold air (3 - 10 RWHP), and a good re-tune at a reputable shop (necessary to get all those horses to work together well, and adding maybe 5 RWHP itself). All that will set you back about $2500-$3500 for parts (good quality) and labor (someone who knows what they are doing) and add, cumulatively, something in the range of 8-10% more power (30-40 HP) you will feel it and see it at the track. And this is about what real, verifiable RWHP costs, 30 to 40 HP for $2500 to $3500: about $80 to $100 per . . .
