Default C4 gas gauge problem

I am the new owner of an 89 which I bought from a good friend. As a daily driver, I'm loving the car...EXCEPT...It has left me stranded twice now out of gas. Both times the gauge showed several bars. Once the "range" showed 24 miles today it read 65 miles. My friend, who is a seasoned gear head and a Corvette fanatic, bought it after it had been sitting for a while and I believe it had water in the tank. He replaced the injectors etc. and other than the gauge problem, it runs like a champ.

My question is where should I start first to solve this problem? The cluster itself, although all the other readings seem to be spot on, the sending unit or what? I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Wilton

I think you need to put some Chevron Techron in the tank. That will disolve the crud on the sending unit.

I agree with c2c3c4 but I prefer shell gasolines, and some berryman fuel system cleaner would also help. I put some in my tank at every oil change.

When you swapped the cluster, did you reinstall YOUR anti-slosh module on the back of it (it's a little circuit board about two inches square). If so, it may be the whole problem and not the gauge or wiring. Same thing happened to my '90 5.0 hatch...

The stock sending unit, IIRC, is about 140 ohms full and 25 empty. You can take the sending unit out of the tank and check it with an ohm meter to get the exact numbers...

1 Im quite sure, tested everyting as per tsrm. with a test light. Sending unit is sending out signal and working as it should. The wiring is ok aswell as the signal gets to the cluster connector aswell. but gauge does not move.I can not stimulate the gauge to move as the tsrm instructs. resistance of the gauge circuit is also out of spec by about 4 times. I see no other conclusion I can draw except the gauge is broken.drill seems so ghetto, but I guess it would work _________________Diamond covers the needs of women drivers
