My stepson is about 20 miles away and the oil pressure needle in his '07 is pegged and the dash reads 180. Could it just be a sensor or sending unit? Is it safe to drive for 30 or 40 miles?

Another possibility is the sensor is going bad. Might check pressure with external pressure gauge. Not sure what you meant by it was leaking from around the oil pump but it could also be from around the pan since the oil pump is inside the pan.
