81 Electrical issue
I have an 81 Vet and after driving it for a couple of days to work and home, when I try to start it, the motor does not turn over. It act's like the battery is dead when I turn the key switch, but all electrical functions work properly (radio plays, lights). After turning the key several times the engine will start and preform fine. Is there a relay in the system between the battery and starter that may be preventing any power going to the starter? Had it at a shop for a month and it only did this once (only in America). When the mechanics started to work on it they told me the starter was not getting any power and then it began to work properly and they could not find any faults after that.

RE: 81 Electrical issue
Hi meleck, It sounds like your starter solenoid is defective. It could be a problem in the key but they last forever. You may be able to buy just the solenoid or you may have to put a rebuilt starter on. While your at it try to find someone in your area that does only Corvette's. You'll spend a lot less time with the local shops that have never worked on a vette before.PG>

RE: 81 Electrical issue
Thanks for the response. I replaced the complete starter and solenoid earlier, however maybe the heat from the exhaust is effecting the new part. I haven't tackeled the switch yet but it is on my list. If you think of any new ideas please keep me in mind.
Thanks,
Mel

RE: 81 Electrical issue
Hi melmck, sorry that your 81 is still giving you problems, I don't have a 81 wiring diagram but on the 82 diagram they show a "motor pulse relay/electronic delay relay" between the switch and starter, I don't have any experiance with an 81 since my car is older but that might be another place to look.PG.
