Gas Tank Issue
I accidentally posted this in the C5 section. I don't know if it can be deleted. I reposted here.
I purchased a 76 Vette back in Oct of 2006. Although the vette runs great, it has had electrical issues that drain the battery within a couple of hours and therefore it hasn't been driven much. My new years resolution is to completely repair the vette this year. I got an early start on this resolution as I was heading out to go 4x4ing with my daughter and noticed a wet spot on the garage floor behind the vette. When I went to investigate, the gas tank was leaking. After removing the spare tire holder, I noticed someone had tried to repair the tank using JB Weld and was using carpet as some sort of pad. (See image)

My issue is that I don't know how to properly drain the gas in the tank. I have 3 sets of manuals but they are for the 1976 vett which shows the fuel connections at the bottom of the tank. The current tank I have corresponds with the 1982 body (fuel connections on top) but my manuals do not tell me how to drain this tank.
Can anyone give me some pointers on draining the tank and if the tank can be removed with the body still on the car?
I'd like to get the gas out tonight so I can push it back into the garage. Tomorrow I'll have to go out and get 82 manuals I suppose.
Any help is appreciated.

Shark,
Yeah, I grabbed the mouthwash and went out to try and siphon but no luck. I could see gas on the hose but when I blew into the hose I didn't hear any bubbling. I don't know if there is a bladder or if the tank is almost empty. It's still dripping pretty good. (I went ahead and used the mouthwash for good measure though.)
The Haynes manual said to disconnect the exhaust to get it out of the way for the tank removal. Unfortunately, the only disconnect points are the supports back by the mufflers and where the exhaust connects to the headers. My assembly manual for the 76 shows a completely different exhaust set up than what is under the car. (Maybe an 82 exhaust?)
I do have another question:
I'd like to strip this thing down to the frame to powder coatand replace parts as needed. Arguably, this may not be feasable since the car is already a mix and match (76 frame / 82 body). Any thoughts on that aspect?
If I were to strip it down, is anyone aware of a step by step manual that would go through that entire process in a proper sequence?

Hi TX_Renegade, I siphon gas from my tank all the time to fill the lawn mower can, I bought a siphon gadget from the hardware store, comes with a bulb that you squeeze, it only cost about $ 2.00.
Also, there are two rubber lines at the fuel pump, if you pull off the supply side gas will come out, not sure how long that would take or if you would have enough room under there for a can.
For the electrical problem you might want to fully charge the battery than disconnect the red cable on the alternator, leave the cable off overnight, if the battery is ok 24 hours later than you have a bad diode in the alternator.
If the battery is drained again than the alternator is good and you have topull a battery cable and put one end of an ohm meter to the battery and the other end to the cable, and pull one fuse at a time, when the meter goes to zero that is the circut that you have to trouble shoot.
PG.
