Default hot air coming out of the vents

I have extremely hot air coming out of the foot vents on my car. All the controls are off but there is still air coming out from the fan blowing. It is only coming out the floor because when I had the dash apart awhile ago, I didn't line it up correctly. Is there any way to disconnect the fan? Or how do I go about fixing it? Not sure where to start. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

forgot to add that it is a1979 L48 with a 3 speed transmission. I don't use the A/C because it needs to be recharged, the t-tops help but it is hot as %^$& on my right leg.

Hey riley, for a quick temporary summer-time fix you can disconnect the heater hoses from the nipples on the heater core and pipe the hoses together. This will bypass the heater core completely and still circulate coolant through the water pump before the t-stat opens. It sounds like you may have some heat/AC control issues due to vacuum lines not connected properly or the dampers in the heater box are not responding. Now bear in mind you will get some warm air from the cowl due to engine heat in that area but it should cool down as you drive because the fresh incoming air will replace the hot air in the cowl and ductwork.

I had a problem w/ hot air when everything was off and it was the heater control valve. Unlike the older stuff when the valve worked w/ a cable, mechanically, the one in the 'Vette works w/ vacuum. When you get the "hot air" problem, the heater control valve is usually beat, the diaphram is leaking and not closing the circuit off, notstopping the flow of hot water through the heater core. I'm not saying that it's the only thing that can cause the hot air, but it's the most common one. Good Luck.
