Hi,

I just purchased a 1990 C4 with about 66K on it. The smog pump (air pump) wobbles when idling, and it makes noise. Anyone else have this problem? Not sure if the pump is bad (bearings, etc), or if it is a problem with a pulley, etc. Any thoughts or input would be appreciated. THANKS!

 

I bought a '90 earlier this year and the air pump was making noise. I just changed it. They are only about $50 at rockauto.com. The one I got works fine..

 

your air pump has reached its limit of use it sounds to me,sounds like it time for areplacement to me, make sure to have it replaced before your belt gets thrown off and you get a fat towing bill[:@]

 

Thanks for the responses fellows. Infinity, question for you: Was your pump also visibly "wobbling" or shainking prior to your replacement, or was it just making noise?

 

No wobbling or shaking, just bearing noise. I have had the car for about 10 months and have replaced various items that have gone bad or were bad on the car. You will find this common on cars this old. Not sure about your mileage, mine is at about 93k.
