Default rpm gauge going nuts!

My tachometer decided to stop working some time ago. It seems to work sporadically. Although not accurately. Anybody had a similar problem? Mine seems to work at hard acceleration and then drops to -0- as it bounces up and down at its will. Like I said sometimes it works and the rest of the time it just bounces or lays dead.
Thanks, ZR1clone

I would suspect a problem in the tach filter, a small metal cylinderical can near the coil.

What Tacky said or perhaps a loose or busted wire or bad ground somewhere in line. Hang in there maybe Mech259 will chime in with the answer. Cheers
