I have a 1978 vette. And have a problem and wanted to see if anyone might have a idea how to fix it. The handle you pull to open the hood has broke. I can pull on the cable and only one side of the hood will pop open the other side is locked down and I cant get it to open.I really really dont want to have to cut the hood to get that latch open. So please help if you have any ideas let me know.

I had the same problem this spring, if its the passenger side that is stuck you need to lift the driver side of the hood as much as possible ( i used a tennis ball between the fender and the hood to hold it open ) be careful not to crack the hood. if you look under the proped up side of the hood you will be able to see the latch, on the right side of the latch you will find the crossover cable (this goes to the other latch) pull the cable (I used an aluminum rod and bent a hook on the end) and as long as the cable isnt broken the hood should release. The crossover cable seems to stretch , there are several holes driller on either end of it to allow you to tighten it. I replaced mine. I KNOW ECKLERS CORVETTE SELLS A TOOL TO OPEN THE HOOD IF THE LATCH FAILS.GOOD LUCK

 

The tool that Ecklers sells is for C4 vetts with the hood release in the fender, it wont work on a C3. However there is a body plug in the wiper tray that can be removed, but I still could not get the latch through it, not enough room to get a long enough screwdriver in ( too close to windshield ). After I got mine open , I drilled a hole directly behind the latch and placed a body plug in it. So if my cable streches again all I need to do is remove the new larger plug and pop the latch.
