Default Auto Transmission

Hey! I'm new at this whole forum thing so be patient... Ok. I have a 78 silver anniversary vette, and it has a 3 speed auto. I want to change the transmission so that I can get some more grears - I get terrible milage. I've talked with a few guys and they said that the 700R4 would work, but that it wasn't a very tough transmission in the pickup trucks. Anyway, I don't want to change my rearend gears; I like the spunk that it has, I just want a gear or 2 more. Thanks ~Wade

Wade, boy have I got a deal for you! What you want is a 200-4R. It's an overdrive type like the 700 R4,but it will bolt in place of a turbo 350 (what you have). Your best bet would be to contact the Bowtie Overdrive people, tell them what you're up to and they'll set you up with what you'll need. It even comes with a kit to modify your shifter so it will work with the 200. They will assign you a tech guy and he will stay with you all the way thru 'til it's on the road. I have one of these in my 79 and am totally happy with it! If you go with the 700 you'll need to move the crossmember and shorten the drive line. When built just a little the 200 will be stronger than a 700.
Good Luck!
Ron

Price depends on the horsepower level you want the thing to handle. I think mine was built for like 400 hp and it was under $2000.
