Default Shifting problems

I bought an 85 vette and it has a 4+3,if u go to far to the left 1st & 2nd will not go in, unless u go to the center of the shift box and go slightly to the the left. It fells like the shifter is sloppy, also if u downshift from 3rd to 2nd it does the same thing. Also the instrument cluster doesn't work very well during the day and u can't see the cluster at night.Any and all advice is helpful.

Sounds to me like your shifter linkage needs adjusting, or some parts are worn and need replacing. I'll leave the detailed response to the experts here, though...

As for the instrument cluster, there are several places out there to get reconditioned ones....

Thanx top speed, I took it to covette specailist in corona,ca because a smog shop jammed it in 2nd gear tring to smog it.They said it was ok, but all they did was unjammed it from second gear so it would be drivable again.
